Short history

A Tree Rooted in History – Revered Across Continents

Originally named Pavlovnia, the Paulownia tree underwent a name change to honor Dutch Queen Anna Pavlovna, becoming the “Princess Tree” or “Empress Tree.” Revered in China as the “dragon tree” and in Japan as “chiri,” Paulownia has been an integral part of Japanese culture since 200 CE. Tradition dictates planting a Paulownia tree at a daughter’s birth, later using its wood for wedding chests. Its exceptional wood quality and resistance to fire make it a preferred material for furniture and construction, even in modern Japan.

Legend associates planting a Paulownia with the arrival of the Phoenix bird, bringing good luck to the house. China, historically the largest producer with over 1.2 billion trees, introduced Paulownia to the US in the 19th century. The seeds adapted to the local climate, leading to its widespread growth. By the 1990s, Paulownia plantations emerged in the Mid-Atlantic and Southeastern US, cultivating high-quality light wood. In Romania, Paulownia gained prominence around 2011, steadily becoming more recognized and mediatized. The journey of Paulownia reflects a rich tapestry of cultural significance and global influence.

Lightweight Strength and Timeless Elegance

Paulownia wood excels in dimensional stability, making it ideal for precise applications in tool making, furniture, and crafts. Its outstanding fire resistance and low thermal conductivity ensure safety in critical situations like aerospace applications and fire-resistant structures. Moreover, the wood is durable, renewable, and fast-growing, reaching maturity in 4-7 years with minimal resource use. In summary, Paulownia wood’s unique combination of stability, fire resistance, and sustainability makes it a prized material in various industries.
